University of California, Irvine
Jodaiko is a Collegiate Taiko group based on the main campus of the University of California, Irvine. Now in its 28th year since inception, Jodaiko brings the Japanese art of Taiko to UCI and the rest of Southern California. The word "Jodaiko" means "passionate drumming" in Japanese and Jodaiko could not have been described better.
Taiko has had a Japanese/Japanese American cultural presence in the United States- especially California- since the late 1960s. Most taiko groups in the US practice Kumi-daiko or "group drumming." Jodaiko is committed to both respecting and continuing traditions of kumi-daiko with a spirit of passion and dedication, while at the same time embracing the innovation and musical exploration that comes with being a collegiate group in North America. Jodaiko encourages members of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds to come experience the resounding beat of the drums from Japan.
